Tennessee Republican U.S. Representatives Vote in Favor of Impeaching DHS Secretary Mayorkas

Mayorkas Impeachment Vote

All eight Tennessee Republican U.S. Representatives voted ‘Yes’ on two articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday.

Despite the impeachment bid (H. Res. 863) against Mayorkas failing to pass by a 214-216 vote, Tennessee U.S. Representatives Diana Harshbarger (R-TN-01), Tim Burchett (R-TN-02), Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN-03), Scott DesJarlais (R-TN-04), Andy Ogles (R-TN-05), John Rose (R-TN-06), Mark Green (R-TN-07), and David Kustoff (R-TN-08) all went on record voting in favor of the impeachment articles.

Prior to the vote, DesJarlais oversaw debate on the House floor for the impeachment articles.

Congressmen Green and Rose both spoke on the House floor prior to the vote.

“Secretary Mayorkas swore an oath to defend the U.S. Constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic. Unfortunately, it seems as though he hasn’t defended it from a single on,” Rose said during remarks on the House floor. “I urge the House to join me in voting to impeach Secretary Mayorkas and urge the Senate to remove him from his position.”

Green, the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, presented the articles and urged his colleagues to vote in favor of impeaching Mayorkas.

Shortly after the final vote was recorded, Green issued a statement, saying, “While I’m disappointed in the outcome of today’s vote, this is not the end of our efforts to hold Secretary Mayorkas accountable.”

Three Republican U.S. Representatives – Mike Gallagher (R-WI-08), Tom McClintock (R-CA-05), and Ken Buck (R-CO-04) – voted against impeaching Mayorkas on Tuesday.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA-01), who is battling cancer, was not present at the time of the vote, however, has supported the impeachment of Mayorkas.

Republicans are expected to take up the impeachment vote in the future when the votes to pass the resolution are secure and all members will be present.

“I look forward to Leader Scalise’s return,” Tennessee’s Green added.
